The Miracle Of Prayer
What is prayer? In simple terms, prayer is communicating with God. It is a grace and privilege that God has given to man to communicate with Him. Prayer is also a form of worship as it is a total surrender to God allowing Him to intervene in our life and situation. It is acknowledging that we cannot make it in this life on our own without God.
Prayer has 4 major aspects that are well known as A.C.T.S. that is Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. Adoration is praising God for who He is, Confession is acknowledging and repenting from our sins (The term repent means to turn away from), Thanksgiving is expressing gratitude for what God has done in someone’s life. And finally, Supplication is a humble petition or request that is made to God.
Prayers can either be long or short, done alone or in corporate, aloud or silent. But all in all, the effectiveness of prayer doesn’t depend on its length or the number of people praying, neither does it depend on how loud we shout because the scripture says that our Father in heaven knows what we need before even we open our mouths to ask. After all, He is all-knowing.
We should ask ourselves this question, how then do we pray? How can we have effective prayers? The scripture says that “Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit”. (James 5:17-18).
From the above scripture, we can conclude that the effectiveness of our prayers is not based on our personality. God is not a respecter of persons; He doesn’t favor you in prayer because of your status in society or your gender, nationality, or race. If Elijah was a man of flesh and blood as we are and yet he prayed an effective prayer. We have the same privilege to pray effective prayers.
Prayer is based on our motives. Before one prays, he should first ask himself this question; why am I praying in the first place? If you one doesn’t answer this question, his prayer will just be like one of the other religious acts. That is why Jesus Christ said; “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. (Mathew 6:5).
In another place, the scripture says that “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures”. (James 4:3). Our motive matters a lot during our prayers, God searches and knows our hearts very well. He says in the book of Jeremiah that;
“The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
I, the Lord, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings”.
How then are we supposed to pray? If prayer is total submission and reliance to God then prayer should always be done in faith in the God that we are praying to. Just have a look at this example, suppose you are holding a young child in your arms and you look at the face of the child and find out that the child is in fear and looks anxious because the child is afraid that you might drop him to the ground to die. If you are the parent of the child, how will you feel?
During the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ, before He could perform any miracle or healing, He could first ask the person in need this question, do you believe that I can heal you? Jesus Christ wanted to get assurance from the person He was attending to if he believed that He had the power to heal or deliver him.
When we pray, we must believe that God is able to attend to our situation. “But without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him”. (Hebrews 11:6). Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. (Mark 11:24). “And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven”. (James 5:15).
Number two, effective prayers should be prayed according to the will of God. Not everything that comes into our hearts is according to the will of God. Some of the thoughts are evil and selfish. Before we pray we should ask ourselves the question, is what I am praying for according to the will of God? Look at the following scripture; You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. (James 4:7).
Someone may ask, how can I know the will of God so that I can pray according to His will? The answer is simple, the will of God is found in the word of God. If we read the word of God we will be able to understand the mind of God and now we will be in a position to pray according to His will. Now, this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. (1 John 5:14-15).
Finally, prayer is one of the most powerful weapons that God has given us to turn situations that may seem to be difficult in humans’ eyes. So, Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. ( Mark 11:22-23) There is no situation in life that God cannot attend to if we ask Him in prayer. But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Mathew 19:26).
With this knowledge, one will have confidence in prayer. That is why when Paul writes to the church in Philippi he writes with confidence after understanding who God is and what He can do. He tells them; Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;( Philippians 4:6)
Let’s us also be patient in our prayers, the fact that you have prayed for something and you have not received doesn’t mean that God is unjust or deaf. Remember His ways are not our ways, He answers us according to His timing. And that is why we should be persistent in our prayers; we should never give up praying. Prayer should be like our daily meal, pray in the morning, pray in the noon time, and in the evening. David the psalmist had known the importance of prayer when he said; Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, And He shall hear my voice. (Psalms 55:7). Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. (Ephesians 6:18) Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18)
